The feeling of exploring the globe with only your backpack and your imagination for company is one that’s hard to beat. But seeking out new experiences and adventure can put you at risk of illness and crime. Most standard travel insurance policies aren’t adequate for backpackers so here at UK Money Market we’ve scoured the internet for the best backpacker insurance.
What’s the lowdown?
Prices vary based on the amount of destinations that you’re planning to visit, whether you’re travelling on your own or as part of a group and whereabouts in the world you will be heading. If you’re looking for the best online discount, visit Barclays who are currently offering 15% off if you buy online. The AA, Explorer Travel Insurance and Endsleigh will all discount you by 10%.
Who do UK Money Market recommend?
For good all round cover, check out Top Dog Insurance who will match their competitors 10% discount while covering you for worldwide travel for up to 548 days with medical cover of up to £10m and a baggage allowance of £500. Our quote from Top Dog for an 18 year old traveller came out at £64.34.
Flexicover Direct were slightly cheaper at £54.10 for the same traveller but for that price you’re only covered for up to £5m of medical expenses.
And who’s the cheapest?
The cheapest cover was from, appropriately enough, CheapTravelInsurance.com whose backpacker insurance cover starts at just £13.56. If you want a little bit extra cover then make the step up to American Express who will insure you for your trip from as little as £38.38.
Can I get it even cheaper?
The above are general quotes for the average backpacker. You will find that you can get covered for even less if exclude the USA and Canada from your cover and don’t take the optional winter sports cover.
Never travel abroad without adequate travel insurance because if the worst came to the worst, there is nothing worse than being stranded thousands of miles from home. Pick the right backpacker insurance for you and enjoy your trip!
